Nisku Ford was more than excited when Ethan Howes, who was playing in the MJT Bantam Boys division, stepped up onto the par-three eighth hole, scoped back to 161 yards, and hit the shot of his life. Not only did this shot make Ethan become the first MJT player to win this contest in the four years since inception, but he was the first junior known to do so in Canadian golf history. His playing partners were amazed to witness the ball go straight into the hole, and much excitement ensued around the course and clubhouse. With Howes’ brilliant shot, his family got to drive home in a brand new 2019 Ford EcoSport from Nisku Ford.

Historic hole-in-one wins new Ford at MJT’s RedTail Landing stop

Nisku, AB - (September 9, 2019) – A historic event for junior golf in the country occurred yesterday during the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s stop in Nisku, AB, where the MJT Ford Series at RedTail Landing Golf ran on September 7 and 8. Junior golfers were competing for titles in seven divisions as well as in a hole-in-one contest on the eighth hole, on day two, to win a new 2019 Ford EcoSport sponsored by Nisku Ford. These incredible odds were unbelievably overcome on a cold, windy and wet day by a 14-year-old from Fort Saskatchewan, AB.

The Low Overall Boys score for tournament went to 17-year-old Nicolas-Guy Landry in the MJT Junior Boys division. The Calgary-resident, who recently represented MJT Team Canada at the Nordic Team Matches in Sweden, carded rounds of 67 and 76 (143) to earn his first MJT win of the 2019 season. “I was happy with my ability to bounce back after a bad stretch,” he said. Seventeen-year-old, Richard Dou, of Calgary, finished the division in second place after recording scores of 69 and 76 (145) over the two days.

Highlights continued in the MJT Juvenile Boys division where a playoff was needed to decide the winner between two 16-year-old, Calgary, AB players: Colton Moscato and Jaden Bradshaw. Down by four shots after the first round, Bradshaw (77,73 = 150) was able to narrow the deficit to one shot going into the 18th hole. Bradshaw made an incredible birdie on 18 to force Moscato (73, 77 = 150) into the playoff. In the end, it was Moscato who emerged victorious earning his first career MJT Hoselton trophy. “I was just thinking about hitting the fairway, hitting the green and making par coming down the stretch,” he commented. “My putting was by far the strongest part of my game.” Edmonton, AB’s Andrew Langford, 16, finished just one shot out of the playoff in third place with scores of 75 and 76 (151).

The MJT Bantam Boys title was captured by 13-year-old Brett Jones of Calgary, who fired excellent rounds of 70 and 75 (145), including an eagle and six birdies in the process. Jones got off to an incredibly hot start on the first day on his way to a four-under, 32, on the front nine. “My putting was pretty good throughout the tournament,” he said. “I thought it was the best part of my game.” Finishing three shots behind in second place was Zachary Haydamack, 14, of Rocky View County, AB, who fired scores of 72 and 76 (148).

Calgary-player, Jacob Magee, 22, took home the Hoselton trophy in the MJT Collegiate division after carding solid rounds of 72 and 75 (147). Magee, who has been a consistent participant on the MJT for six years, shared his thoughts about his performance and playing on the MJT for so many years, saying, “I am more than happy with the [Junior] Tour. Coming down the stretch in this tournament I just thought about keeping the ball in play and hitting fairways.” Magee earned his first MJT win of the 2019 season at RedTail Landing. MJT veteran, Dakota Smith, 23, of Edmonton, finished in second place with scores of 75 and 76 (151).

The Low Overall Girls score for the tournament went to 16-year-old Jenna Bruggeman in the MJT Girls 15-18 division. The Edmonton-resident carded great scores of 71 and 76 (147), making five birdies along the way. “My ball striking did not help me out this week,” she said, when asked about the best part of her game. “Luckily, my putting saved me and helped me score.” Runner-up was Ella Gifford, 16, of Beaumont, AB (89, 86=175).

Jayla Kucy, 13, of Camrose, AB, fired back-to-back rounds of 76 and 76 (152) to run away with the MJT U15 Girls division title. Kucy, who has been playing with the MJT since her days on the Mini Tour in 2014, has seen a steady improvement to her game over the years. Runner-up was 10-year-old Rhea Deo, of Edmonton (95, 106).

The MJT Peewee Boys title was won by 12-year-old Peter Hlushak with scores of 79 and 84 (163). The Spruce Grove, AB-native is finishing up his first full year with the MJT splitting time between the Junior and Mini Tour. Hlushak, who is already a Mini Tour winner, recorded his first career MJT Junior Tour victory at RedTail Landing. Finishing in second place was Edmonton’s Ryan Badger, 12, with scores of 85 and 83 (168).
